My Glam bag issue: false relabeled product

Hi lovelies,

I was on twitter today and @rosenlady informed me about @x3nikkie post about this issue with MyGlam

One of the product that was in Feb bag that I also got, Xout shine control was falsely relabeled after peeling off the label to discover a completely different product underneath it! It turned out to be Meaningful Beauty by Cindy Crawford deep cleansing masque!!

What makes me really upset about this is that the labeled product, what we thought was a LEAVE ON moisturizer is actually is a WASH OFF MASK!! As a person with highly sensitive skin type and try to take a good care of my skin I was completely appalled and disgusted to see this.

    What it is:
  • X Out Shine Control is an oil-free moisturizer with a mattifying complex that helps to instantly absorb excess oil.
    What it does:
  • X Out Shine Control is designed to help moisturize the skin while helping to minimize the appearance of shine, helping to create the perfect canvas to apply your makeup. It's the ideal primer to add to your daily beauty regimen as it hydrates while helping to control oil and mattifying the skin.

What is it:
A "facial in a bottle" that delivers results in 20 minutes. It is a masque with an infusion of antioxidants and marine extracts to purify, deep clean, brighten, lift dead skin cells, and improve elasticity and firmness.

Who is it for:
Anyone who wants to quickly and effectively exfoliate the skin for a more radiant complexion, detoxify and deep clean skin, and improve skin's elasticity. Also for anyone with stressed, dull skin with lack of firmness.

How do I use it:
After cleansing, apply facial masque to the face in a thin layer, avoiding the eye area. After 15 to 20 minutes, rinse with lukewarm water. Use twice a week if your skin is normal or every other day for oily and combination skin types.

So I went to MyGlam's FB to see if they addressed this issue but I didn't see anything, they are posting on their wall with topic that is not this issue like as if nothings going on! I heard they were telling people who contacted their CS that it was a recycled product since both companies are owned by Guthy-Renker(another shady company),, and other excuses but to be honest I think the people at My Glam should of take a look at the products, use them and examine before they included the product in every month. If they actually used this X OUT shine control I think they would said "Hey there is something wrong here"...

TO make a good grace with their name I truly believe they should ADDRESS THIS ISSUE PUBLICLY, refund those who got Feb bag, it is what an honest company should do. Should not be all for profit but instead should look out for people's well being first.

Hope this helped, I am totally canceling their service. I cannot support a company where they are not Honest with their customers and should of addressed with issue with everyone if it was in fact an honest mistake by their behalf but no, still not a word from them on their FB nor twitter... SHADY

XOXO
eki

UPDATE:
a reader sent me the link to this post by my glam on their FB but I didn't see it when I went on it,,
Apparently Guthy-Renker claims the packaging was just recycled and the product inside as still XOUT,, still not trusting my glam since their service had not been great to begin with..

  1. I read that they actually adressed this, saying that they were actually recycling tubes and that the product is actually what is says it is, which is the X-Out shine control.

  2. That doesn't look so good for the MyGlam girls.  They're still a new company and a screw up like this so soon is not acceptable.

  3. I am not surprised about this at all. Michelle Phan seems to be in the business to do shady business. Her last venture, IQQU, really messed up a lot of people's skin with their acne serum. She didn't address that issue up front either, just said that her product had no problem and everything was fine and still continued to promote it. The only reason she stopped promoting it was because she sold the company to someone else. Just from these instances, I would never buy anything that she endorses.

    ReplyDelete
  4. honestly not even surprised.  i mean i love promise phan but the phan family (namely her sister in law) are synonamous with doing shit like this, i mean michelle almost got in deep shit just a few years ago over that shady ass skin care line she was trying to sell off as legit.  i hope word of this spreads fast, and glad i never signed up for that service!

From the statement it appears that they simply had some leftover inventory of tubes which they filled with the XOut product. I'm a bit surprised by the backlash. While I love makeup and beauty products, the industry and consumers create much waste. How many products does the average girl purchase in a month? Does she rinse her used up makeup bottles/jars and recycle them? My guess is no - it's too much  of an inconvenience for the average person. Here is a company that was trying to reuse the materials that they already had instead of adding to the landfill. No big deal.

    ReplyDelete
  6. i would still not trust it =.=" this really sucks .. i'm sure that they will loose many subscriptions because of this..

    ReplyDelete
  7. I do not blame you for the mistrust in the repackage claim, especially with the style of packaging when you think about the manufaturing process and how theyre filled they seem like they would be hard to reuse!

It was really good of you to post this entry!

    ReplyDelete
  8. Its hard to believe that they just used old packaging from another brand for a new brand.... That is sketchy. If that were true they should have realized the huge risk they were putting their company in by allowing that product go into their monthly package....
If I were with MyGlam I would also discontinue my subscription with them for my own safety.

Hard to decide what to believe seeing as there is so much cosmetic fraud going around lately. >.<

    ReplyDelete
  9. I completely support recycling and I trying to prevent more waste in this world, I recycle all my trash from plastic, glass, metal and paper at home I believe everyone should recycle so that it doesn't end up in a landfill just piling up and not being reused.

I believe as a company they seemed to did the right thing by recycling but in a reality they could of recycled that tube packaging by actually sending it out to recycle or simply keep on using that tube as it for that masque since they still manufacture them through meaningful beauty,,

  10. Shady and uncalled for -.-

  11. This is totally unbelievable! I peeled my Y out and you are right, it is a complete different product!!! This is really bad. I will add an update on my blog post, this is a shame!

    ReplyDelete
  12. It's not recycled packaging per say. What Guthy-Renker did was take NEW and UNUSED tubes from the Meaningful Beauty line to fill with XOut. It's not unheard of for companies who distribute multiple lines to do that but it's also not common practice.

I hate infomercial products because I've always thought those were sketchy to begin with and Guthy-Renker just keeps proving to me that they are shady (the WEN conditioner from last month that Guthy-Renker sent to MyGlam is NOT the same as the WEN that is actually sold on Chaz Dean's own website).

Do I blame MyGlam for this? No but I DO blame Guthy-Renker for using pre-labeled tubes in place of blank tubes. Surely they have blank tubes available to them.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I agree with Eki here. I like the idea of recycling the tubes but at the same time it just causes confusion for a lot of users....I mean if this were a real store product [not online] would they sell a product using another products package? I doubt it, they might have just kept the unused tubes for future use. I think the company was looking more to cut back costs as opposed to really looking out for the environment.
We have one planet, but we also have one life, who's to say what was really in that tube? Worst case scenario someone could have had a severe reaction to it. Hopefully that didn't/doesn't happen but that's why packages and labels are really important for some people.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Unbelievable. I was never really a fan of Michelle Phan all that much, even from when I watched her youtube videos, well before she became a makeup celeb. And to see something like this is pretty bad for both the company and for her. I'm surprised because it happened this quickly but also not surprised that it happened. And if you were having problems in the beginning, it makes me relieved that I didn't waste money to subscribe to MyGlam. Honestly, I don't care who is a spokesperson for this so I'm not really taking a shot at Michelle but I agree with you, Eki. How can you buy from a company that is not truthful. Having a celeb will not help the case either if it will bring harm to their customers. Thanks so much for the heads up, Eki. Will definitely reblog this.

  15. Wow...That's messed up. Just when I was thinking of switching from Birchbox to Glam Bag...Hell to the no! lol I think I'll stick with Birchbox, cause I seem to be getting things I like.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Wow. even though they addressed this, they could've done things in a better and more professional matter. At least explain before sending things out or else customers will obviously find out sooner or later and all their reasonings will just seem to be excuses...

    ReplyDelete
  17. I understand that they might gave wanted to just ship out the tubes faster and the pre-labeled tubes were just conveniently already there, but someone from their PR and/or Quality Assurance team needs to get fired.  I feel like the most professional approach would have been to just sub in an entirely different product they had available;  I don't know why MyGlam wouldn't have approved of this.  Or they could have included a note explaining the packaging discrepancy; to make up for the confusion they could've included a small sample of something else as well.  I have a feeling someone from Guthy-Renker's QA team just made a unapproved packaging swap without telling the G-R higher ups or MyGlam.  But if G-R and MyGlam knew about it - well, I'm not surprised by the attempt to just let it slip by either.    I imagine that the 5 gurus backing the company plan on building up the MyGlam brand and selling it off in a year or so for a tidy profit.   It's the best thing to do, especially when their strength is building an image, not a company.  Hopefully they will prove me wrong, but none of the chicks behind MyGlam seem very interested in the operational aspects of running a sustainable business.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Nothing like beatIng a dead horse. Get over it. I feel like you ladies have no lives to get so up in arms over nothing.

    ReplyDelete
  19. That's tad ridiculous. MyGlam did in fact address the issue and this is the exact opposite of false advertising. Had they NOT put the new labels on THAT would be false advertising. Not only that, the average person can tell the difference between a mask and a mattifying product; a mask doesn't absorb into the skin and what we got clearly does. This is a bunch of hoopla over nothing.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I'm disgusted, that's beyond dodgy. You don't just refill empty tubes and relabel them without telling customers! *sigh* I shouldn't be surprised through, it's Michelle Fraud *cough* Phan.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I don't think it's ridiculous at all, if you go take a look at their Facebook wall page and their twitter page you DO NOT see them address this issue if you looked through them. I only saw them addressing this issue after looking at the link to this message. I never mentioned false advertisement, I said false relabeled product which is a fact. This was my initial reaction to this issue before I read their response, I also updated with their response so that everyone could see what this issue was all about.

    ReplyDelete
  22. wow I can't believe this! It just makes you even more weary of all those infomercials >.>

    ReplyDelete
  23.  How can you be sure that what they're saying it's true? The point here
is not "i don't want my package to be recycled" is that we want to know
what the fuck we got and how to use it properly!

Don't you think it would be a great marketing if Myglam or even Guthy
Renker tell people that they are recycling packages so don't worry about
the label, blah blah blah, they're doing this for the enviroment. But
    no!

How can we know that these packages was stored in a proper way? How can
we know if they were going to trash for not having the minimal package
standards? How can we know that the product inside is really the X-out?
It doesen't even have an expiration date!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Interesting. I never used IQQU & never research about it, so I didn’t know ppl had bad reaction to it. Although I was curious on why I never saw her talking about it again. ...

    ReplyDelete
  25. That sounds pretty shady and weird..

    ReplyDelete
  26. *Sorry Eki, another comment >.<"

Dear "sd" i don't think this is ridiculous because she wasn't sponsored or got this for free. Eki payed and we all payed for receiving trustable products from a newborn company.
The problem here is not just the package. How can the Myglam management choose a company without any standards or investigations if it's good or not? Did they even tried the product or just add it on the bag because the company was one of the few ones that was able to do business with them?
Back to my other comment, how can we know if they are really telling the truth or just triying to come up with an excuse to make people don't cancell the subscriptions? I'm not saying they're liying but how can we know? Shady product, shady company with a relabeled tube and you're ok with it? well i'm not! And this will never touch my skin for sure!

    ReplyDelete
  27. aiii. I was already hesitating on continuing because I was disappointed at my MyGlam Bag~

now.... I guess.. I will... probably.. most likely... cancel....

what other subscription bags are out there? I kind of want to subscribe cuz i really like surprises!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Oh man, if I was in that situation I would probably crap in my pants. What a stain on their reputation!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Wow that is just pure bullshit. MyGlam are definitely never gonna get any money from me. I think it's just generally a TERRIBLE idea to use any pre-printed containers and just stick another description on there. My god..

    ReplyDelete
  31. THAT IS ABSOLUTELY SHOCKING! I'd dump them right away! False labelling is ILLEGAL for heaven's sake!

    ReplyDelete
  32. They should be reported to the FTC and FDA for their violation.

  33. Wow! People with sensitive skin will really suffer because of this! I was going to get this, but thank god I changed my mind!

    ReplyDelete
  34. umm do you know what "false advertising" even means? it's reaaallllly not hard to put two and two together, and realize: OH, they're just rebranded, unused bottles. it's all owned by Gunthy Renker, which owns all sorts products.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Try Birchbox! I've liked what I've been receiving

  38. Shame on My Glam! this made me believe more that they're for profit only, most likely , !!! mad!!

  39. The firse two words on your comment on the MyGlam page is "False Advertising", so stop saying you didn't say it.  It's there in black and white

    ReplyDelete
  40. That's extreme penny pitching.

    A huge no-no.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Well... This is disappointing. Shocking. People need to stop being so ignorant about this blog post. False labeling is a big deal. What if something terrible happened to your face? (already read about people's reactions about burning from the cream). It's your health & trust!

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  46. its ok, thank you for replying :)

    ReplyDelete
  47. also I never commented on MyGlam page where ever that is so I really don't understand why you need to point out something I didn't even say or to accuse me of lying? I am just here informing my experience with my readers on this product and did made sure to include all the facts in this post.

    ReplyDelete
  48. If anything this is just a poor decision from the original manufacturing company and poor insight and observation from MyGlam. Both put a had in what happened for their February bag, so they will now have to learn the hard way, that when dealing with consumers who are interested in your products (esp. make up) you have to be wary of the quality of the products you are endorsing. There goes their high & mighty image and reputation out the window. They are going to have a hard time from now onwards to retain their current customers and entice new customers too! >_>;

    ReplyDelete
  49. That is dangerous. What if the product is not the one mentioned on the false label?

    ReplyDelete
  50.  SHE WASNT THE ONE POSTING THE LINK DUMBASS

    ReplyDelete
  51. Wow this is one shady business, we the problems they had in January, now this, the future of this business looks very opaque. They need to take the time to iron out those wrinkles instead of asking what the weather is and such. And what's the deal with sending out light/medium concealers when you don't even know the skin tone of your customers? Why even take that quiz? Shady business...

    ReplyDelete
  52. omigosh that is so bad... I agree with recycling too but theres a line you gotta draw between trying to be eco-friendly and maintaining trust and quality and just placing a sticker over tube description causes so much doubt as to the true intentions of the company!

    ReplyDelete
  53. This is seriously BAD...I mean I have no concern if they re-cycle the tube because it mean good. But one thing that really hit me is that when you re-cycle and re-labelled the tube, don't you company actually inform the users on this matter??  At least we know that it's re-labelled for good. But this company actually pretend like nothing happened until the end-users have to point this out. It's like you're actually selling us a toothpaste box without the actual toothpaste. Honestly, that's not the way of doing business especially it involve with skin!!

    ReplyDelete
  54. I'm not sure what to believe in this case. All I do know is that I usually use high end facial products. I use the Philosophy "makeup optional" line and my skin was looking awesome. And after I tried the X-Out from my Feb Glam bag, my skin broke out terribly. It still hasn't cleared up, even though I only used it the one time. At first I wasn't sure what happened- one day my skin was almost flawless, and the next day I was having zits pop up all over the place. Now it makes sense, because I had tried this product.

    ReplyDelete
  55. MyGlam should have wrote a note explaining this matter, before giving the bag to their customers. It seems that myglam  doesn't even really care what they put into their bags as long as people are buying from them...

    ReplyDelete
  56. Hopefully MyGlam will learn a lesson from this... I cancelled my subscription as well. Instead I'll save that $10 and wait for positive reviews on trusted products to invest in than rely on a company that doesn't even know what they're Putting in customers' bags!! I also don't think it's overreacting by any of us because we worry about what we put on our akin or in our bodies, an there are companies out there who really don't care as long as they end up with money in their pockets. Not saying that's what GR or MyGlam are after, but as of now I'm choosing to take my business elsewhere. I'll still support Michelle Phan as a fan of her videos and other ventures, but MyGlam doesn't appeal to me anymore, sadly.

  59. it's illegal to use recycle unused tubes by re-labeling them? I didn't know that.. because I've seen it elsewhere too; like just a few weeks ago I got a monster energy drink that they were handing out on campus, and they repackaged over their old design.

    ReplyDelete
  60. why is it a terrible idea to recycle? but more unused garbage for the landfills is great, I suppose. reminds me of: http://tiskin.com/designer-wedding-dresses-spray-painted-with-graffiti-by-closing-down-bridal-store-priscilla/

it's not myglam, it's guthy-renker which owns companies like x-out, proactiv, cindy crawford, etc. how on earth would myglam have known if it weren't for people bringing it up?

    ReplyDelete
  61. I like birchbox because they don't partner with gimmicky mall-kiosk companies and drugstore brands, but the distribution of products in different boxes (in the same month) is awful. sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you don't :/ my boxes were always pretty mediocre

    ReplyDelete
  62. soo I don't even like myglam that much, but these comments are kind of ridiculous.
    a. it's guthy-renker, they own a bunch of different brands including cindy crawford and x-out. isn't it pretty obvious myglam had no oversight on how products were packaged?
    b. michelle phan is just a figurehead, I doubt she does anything other than make reviews on the products offered in each bag

it's a sample subscription service, they don't make their own products.

    ReplyDelete
  63. A sad attempt at trying to save a few dollars... bad for branding.

  64. It's called quality control, you might have heard of it.

  66.  how can you RE-fill an unused, empty tube? I don't know what's disgusting about that

    ReplyDelete
  67. wow Eki, this pose totally made me re-thinking about working with them.

    ReplyDelete
  68. If the product is really a masque than it is pretty shitty. The product is obviously a moisturizer. It is extremely thin and absorbs into the face within second. I honestly believe it is just a recycled tube

    ReplyDelete
  69. WOW that still sounds really shady even with their explanation. You wouldn't do that with a product you'd supply in stores..

    ReplyDelete
  70. So glad you cancelled, so glad I CANCELLED TOO. It all started bad for because I never even got my bag  I paid and signed up for. Then got Feb bag, it was alright and I kept on hearing bad review from my fellow friends. Just disgusting. They are a hot mess and definitely need to make some changes before the company is ruined. -__-  such a shame!

    ReplyDelete
  71. Seriously, you guys need to calm down, they just want to recycle, yes its true you don't know what goes on behind the scene, but the fact that the product is OBVIOUSLY not a masque, there is a HIGH CHANCE its the x-Out product, and Michelle Phan didn't package the cream and place the sticker on the tube herself, why do people see the need to blame her. She's only promoting the product. If Guthy-Renker wasn't honest with her about the labelling, she would not know either. Amazing how none of you think about it as recycle and just talking crap about it, and not actually thinking into the reasons they would do this. If you want, make a formal complaint, not talk here, where they won't be able to address the issue. Consumers should help manufacturers get better, not tear them down.

  73. I understand the concern/disgust but blaming Michelle or any of the gurus for a problem with Myglam/the Guthy-Renker company, is like blaming Adriana Lima for Victoria's Secret selling defective bras.

The gurus are ADVERTISERS. They spread the word about myglam, go to the meetings, make videos. They're not the managers/supervisors who make deals with companies and buy their products, they're not inspectors who check if the products are accurate. This job is left up to the office workers/supervisors/employees of Myglam.

    It's common sense guys.
I think some of you just want any chance to rat on Michelle.

  75. Okay, I just happned upon this post because I was researching the issue after watching an old unboxing video. I actually worked in the call center for Guthy Renker for a few months and want to address them as a company. It sort of annoys me when people call them shady or the like. 99% of the reason they get called shady is because of their enrollment in to the replenishment program. If you as a consumer don't pay attention when ordering something that is your problem. It is clearly stated on the website when you checkout AND on the phone when you order that you are agreeing to this program. We cannot legally take your order without this agreement. I cannot tell you how many times people have argued with me that they did not agree to it. I'm not saying that it's possible you got a shitty salesperson who didn't tell you on the phone (and I promise, for legal reasons which are obvious, that employee will get fired sooner or later) but I know FOR A FACT that the website states it on every single order. /rant
As far as this re-labeling fiasco goes, it is very simple to use pre-printed bottles for another product. The bottles come in empty, with the caps on and the sealed end open. They go through a packaging system where the bottle is filled from the bottom side and then sealed up. Yes, it is more of a money saving strategy than actually trying to be green as in a month or so they would have used all of those masque bottles for their intended product, but it is not at all dangerous or even misleading. The product in the bottle was labeled correctly with the correct usage directions and warnings. The expiration date listed on the bottle is the correct date for the shine control as that is impressed at time of sealing.
I hope this helps with any confusion though of course this issue is over a year old.
